The Can Cage (Recycling)

The Can cages are working well with all Clunes supporters getting behind it and doing

their bit. After each home game we have been able to fill the big cage, but as always we

can do a little bit more and what we mean by this is that all the cans that we consume at

home can be saved up. So remember Drink it, Crush it, Collect it and Bring it so we can

cash it.

Clunes bid farewell to Nemani Valucava

The Clunes Football Netball Club would like to announce that Nemani Valucava will not renew his Senior Football Coaching contract for the 2018 season.

Due to travel and family commitments Val has made the decision not to renew his contract despite the clubs aspiration to see him return in 2018.

Val has proven to be a great asset to the club in 2017, bringing a wealth of information and professionalism to the football side of the club. The development of our junior players moving into seniors has been terrific. Although our ladder position hasn’t changed in 2017, the improvement from the side to be more competitive has definitely been noticed.

We wish Val, Anita and Ratu all the best in the next chapter of their lives.

The process is underway to find a new coach for the 2018 season to build on the work Val has put in place. We will be looking to secure a coach for a minimum 2 year term to bring back some stability within the group.

Please forward any applications or queries to clunesmagpies@gmail.com.

Vale Barry Hills

Barry Hills was recruited in the summer of 1991-92 to Clunes thanks to the efforts of the executives of the Clunes Football Club.  It was to be an incredible success with Barry's coaching career stats becoming legendary at the club in the modern era.  A strict disciplinarian his coaching methods and strong will changed the culture of our club.  The senior football side had not played in the CHFL finals series since 1982.  He moulded a mix of young locals and a couple of recruits into a formidable side.  He appointed Bernie Massey from Redan FC as his assistant.  The recruitment of Leigh Bond from Talbot to be the masterstroke for success adding another key forward to the team that was spearheaded by prolific goalkicker Kevin Dunn.

Barry was a coaches 'coach'.  He didn't aim to become everyone's best friend, he was there to do a job and set about creating a change to work ethic and training that hadn't been adopted at the club before.  Many a session ended in outright fatigue as he stretched the young group to its limits and beyond.  He demanded effort and very quickly results started to turn around onfield.  After commencing the 1992 year with 1 win and 2 losses the team strung together consecutive victories marching through to a Grand Final in his first season.  The grand final played out at Learmonth in atrociously wet conditions.

1993 became a season to cherish as the team racked up the same number of home and away wins as the previous year.  The team played a star studded Ballan side that season in the grand final and won the clubs second premiership in the CHFL.  Barry played at fullback in the team and will always remembered for his booming left foot kicks out of defence.  Many a local saying they had never seen anyone kick a ball further.

During the 1994 season Barry commenced his training for the Police Academy during the season.  This was to start a long and fruitful career.  A successful career that has given him many friends and saw him contribute and serve the community for years.  The CFNC is deeply saddened at the loss of their 1993 Premiership Coach.  His coaching record below speaks volumes of the man, a 76% winning coach at our club.  His ability to turn us into a winning team in the 3 years of his leadership is truly amazing and will never be forgotten by those at the club.

Our deepest sympathies pass to his wife Sally, his children Ash, Jayde, Josh and Clayton.
